Artist Residency – Alliance Française de Pondicherry
Located in the heart of White Town, Pondicherry’s historic district, just a five-minute walk from the Alliance Française and overlooking the Bay of Bengal, the Artist Residency offers a privileged environment dedicated to artistic creation, research, and cultural exchange. Situated in a city where French and Indian heritage have intertwined for centuries, the residency provides artists with the opportunity to immerse themselves in a unique setting shaped by a vibrant Franco-Indian identity.
Open to both Indian and international artists, the residency primarily supports artistic projects connected to France and Pondicherry, the French-speaking world (Francophonie), or Franco-Indian cultural exchanges. It welcomes artists working in visual arts, photography, music, writing, performing arts, and any other discipline whose project aligns with the mission of the Alliance Française: promoting contemporary creation, fostering intercultural dialogue, and strengthening connections between French, Indian, and international artistic communities.
Artists in residence are also encouraged to share their work and creative process with the public through exhibitions, workshops, lectures, artist talks, or performances organized in partnership with the Alliance Française.
To support their creative work, selected artists are provided with accommodation as well as a per diem for the entire duration of their residency.
Residencies are offered for periods ranging from two to three weeks.
Established as an extension of the cultural mission of the Alliance Française de Pondicherry, the residency serves as a space for exchange, research, and artistic experimentation. Its objective is to encourage collaborations between French and Indian artists, facilitate the circulation of ideas and artworks, and make Pondicherry a privileged meeting place between cultures.
The residency consists of two fully equipped apartments located on the seafront promenade:
Le Dupleix, a two-bedroom apartment accommodating up to three people (one double room and one single room).
L’Eiffel, a two-bedroom apartment accommodating up to eight people, making it particularly suitable for artistic collectives, companies, and group projects. Two additional sleeping arrangements can be set up on sofas, allowing the apartment to host up to ten people depending on the needs of the project.
Both apartments feature dedicated workspaces, Wi-Fi access, fully equipped kitchens, air conditioning, and balconies overlooking the Bay of Bengal, providing a comfortable and inspiring environment for creative stays.
To apply, artists are invited to complete the application form available below, presenting their residency project, artistic intentions, and the cultural activities they wish to propose during their stay. Particular attention will be given to projects that highlight the relationship between France and India, the French language, Francophonie, or collaborations with French artists, institutions, or themes.
