The Discrimination of Women in Musical Traditions of India and Europe

Norbert Rouland is Professor at the Law School of Aix-en-Provence, where he teaches at Master’s level. He has written more than twenty books, many of them have been translated into foreign languages.

His talk will focus on a comparative study of the situations of women in various artistic fields mainly in music and dance, where they have been discriminated against on a global level on account of genre stereotyping. As we are in India be held in India, a more specific focus will be put on the role of courtesans and eunuchs, as well as the women / men dualism in Hindu thought.
