KOLKATA JAM MASALA
with Paul Brook, Supriyo Dutta, Mainak « Bumpy » Nag chowdhury, Gaurab Chaterjee
An audio-visual adventure that explores Indian psychedelia, mixing classical Indian music, jazz and rock… It is thanks to the unusual energy of the city of Kolkata that the project Kolkata Jam Masala was born. Far from being a consensual fusion, the music created explores the Indian ragas harmonizing these in a spirit rock’n’roll and psychedelic.
The osmosis between the classical Indian musicians and the musicians of present-day music is so strong that one could describe the style as contemporary Indian music. According to the credo of the collective based on free improvisation, during the lives of Kolkata jam Masala one indication is given to the musicians, that of the Indian mode (Raaga) in which the piece will be improvised.
Like a “Bitches Brew” for African-American jazz, musicians explore Indian psychedelia with endless pleasure. The spiritual spirit of traditional music (trance) is maintained but the form is discussed, revisited and the polyphony exacerbated. The result is a passionate and exciting music in its constant renewal!
